Laura Ashley

Hi crafters. You are probably wondering what inspired this card. Well it was this dress.

I bought the dress secondhand. It is Laura Ashley and made of silk, but the thing that intrigued me was the unusual pattern on it. I’m a sucker for abstract patterns but wouldn’t have considered myself an orange lover, but it works here, and now I appreciate the colour more. (I was also surprised as I didn’t know Laura Ashley did edgy!) The only problem with the dress is I don’t go out enough to wear it more.

For the card, I studied the pattern and decided a resist might work. I stencilled on some orange bits and then some white/ off white with various stencils onto watercolour paper. I used gloss rather than matt acrylic paints. I added a bit of brown which appears in the pattern in small amounts. The brown paint was really thin and mainly smeared. Then I took a black waterbrush marker and painted sections of black over the top. I used a wet rag to wipe off the black from the stencilled acrylic paint. I then put some of the black ink on an acrylic block and diluted it with water. I painted that on the blank bits to have some grey. I’m pleased it worked. Thanks Time Out as I might use this technique again and I wouldn’t have tried it if it wasn’t for the wardrobe challenge.

I added a white heat embossed a Paper Smooches sentiment onto black cardstock and cut it with a speech bubble die and popped it up on foam tape.

Stencils used:

Kaisercraft: Line Art, Stonewall

Darkroom Door: Large Mesh

AALL & Create: #12

Memory Maze: Abstract

I am entering Time Out Challenge #153 wardrobe.

my goodness Christine, this is so, so creative and wow to how close it is to the dress. Love the dress and how funky the pattern is. You are right the splashes of orange are unusual but do work so well. All the detail you added is stunning. I just love all the texture you developed. So pleased our challenge inspired you and thank for joining Time Out

This is absolutely FANTASTIC! I love the pattern on the actual dress, and I LOVE the way you recreated it on your card. Exactly what the challenge is all about, in my opinion! You chose the perfect sentiment too for this fantastic and edgy design!

Oh my, your card is fabulous and what a great dress for inspiration! I hear you on the ‘don’t go out’ thing, I don’t get dressed up very much for the same reason and I wear scrubs to work, so boring in a big way. Actually I bought a couple of ‘house’ dresses recently and the patterns are so beautiful I was inspired too, and thought about recreating them on a card…. maybe I need to do just that! thanks again for more inspiration my friend!

Congrats on your win at TO Christine – the background you’ve created is amazing. You’ve absolutely nailed it. I can’t believe that’s a Laura Ashley dress – I thought they just did florals!
